Tuesday, November 11, 2025, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30p.m. Doctoral School – lecture Ethical Dilemmas and Critical Thinking (Ján Markoš, Academy of Critical Thinking), Dionýz Blaškovič Lecture Hall, BMC SAS Virology Institute, Bratislava
The lecture is intended for BMC SAS employees. Participation of doctoral students is expected.
Thinking about values differs from working with facts. It is less exact, and often we cannot even find the “right” answer. Should we stick to our principles, even if it causes us harm? Or should we focus on results, even if it means bending our principles a little?
Our various identities also come into play. What are we most? Scientists? Employees? Citizens? What if our various responsibilities (to institutions, to the state, to ourselves) conflict with each other?
Ethical dilemmas are a complex and fascinating world. In this lecture, we will talk a little about the theory of value conflicts, but we will focus primarily on practical examples. Some of them will be from your own experience.
