Biological safety and GMOs

The laboratories of BMC SAS meet the legal requirements for working with biological factors of groups 1, 2, and 3 in terms of their structural and technical layout, internal location, and material and technical equipment. The laboratories emphasize compliance with regulations on good laboratory and microbiological practice, workplace hygiene requirements, protective work equipment, as well as technical standards and internal regulations.

The Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, Department of Environmental Risks and Biological Safety, as the competent state administration authority pursuant to Section 2 of Act No. 525/2003 Coll. on State Administration of Environmental Care and on Amendments and Supplements to Certain Acts, as amended, and pursuant to Section 24(1)(b) of Act No. 151/2002 Coll. on the use of genetic technologies and genetically modified organisms, as amended, granted BMC SAS consent for the first use of contained facilities with protection levels 1, 2, and 3.

BMC SAS established, in accordance with §9(2)(a) of Act No. 151/2002 Coll. on the use of genetic technologies and genetically modified organisms, as amended, the Committee on the Safety, which monitors the use of genetic technologies and genetically modified organisms and genetically modified microorganisms in contained spaces, monitors the correctness of risk assessment and classification into risk classes, evaluates the implementation of protective measures corresponding to the classification and the effectiveness of the level of protection, reviews emergency plans, and submits proposals to BMC SAS management for the adoption of necessary measures to eliminate identified deficiencies. The emergency plan is a mandatory written document of BMC SAS, which accompanies the entire process of using genetic technologies. The emergency plan is developed for each specific use of genetic technologies and is a practical aid in the event of an actual accident, enabling the organized liquidation of the accident and the implementation of any rescue measures to protect health or the environment.
