Basic information

The Biomedical Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (BMC SAS) is the largest institution in Slovakia dedicated to basic and applied research in the field of biomedical sciences. BMC SAS was officially established on January 1, 2016, by merging four independent institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, namely the Institute of Experimental Oncology (ÚEO), the Institute of Clinical and Translational Research (ÚKTV, formerly the Molecular Medicine Center), the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology (ÚEE), and the Institute of Virology (VÚ).

On January 1st, 2018 the Institute of Neurobiology located in Košice joined the founding institutes. Currently, the institutes as the main organization units are horizontally integrated at the operational level through unified rules, joint budget, shared special infrastructures and common supporting departments.
