Molecular Oncology

Research Topic

We focus on chemoresistance, metastasis, and interactions in solid tumors. Most topics are investigated in cooperation with clinics, and models such as organoids and patient-derived xenografts are employed. We study the role of aldehyde dehydrogenases in colorectal cancer, investigate epigenetic deregulation in uveal melanoma, focus on predictive and prognostic markers, and the application of liquid biopsy techniques. Additionally, we explore the tumor microenvironment’s role in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and breast cancer. Our previous projects focused on the combination therapies targeted by nanocarriers. Resistance in testicular germ cell tumors is the main topic investigated by the Laboratory for the Translational Cancer Research – a common workplace of BMC, the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, and the National Cancer Institute.

Head of the Research Group

Dr. Miroslava Matúšková focuses on the study of tumor biology, mechanisms of chemoresistance, and metastasis in solid tumors. She has been working at BMC SAS since 2005. She completed her master’s degree at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University in Bratislava in biology, specializing in virology, and her doctoral degree at the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in immunology. In addition to her research activities, she is involved in issues related to the use of animals for scientific purposes and improving animal welfare in biomedical research.
